Living in a time where buying new and throwing away became more obvious than repairing or making ourselves.

We buy new as fast as new trends occur.

Buying became a leisure activity.

Buying new gives us a feeling of happiness, but for how long?

=How can we break this vicious circle?
=How can we prolong the feeling of happiness if we get something new?
=How can we make the making more attractive?

[’s]emble questions the obviousness of buying new. Now that we live in a time where buying new and throwing away have become more obvious than repairing or making ourselves and where we get overwhelmed with new trends and cheap offers, buying things has become something we hardly think about anymore.
Over the years the industry has stimulated this consumerism. Production has to be as fast, as much and as cheap as possible. Unlike in the past, you now find products in every commercial homestore that are made with veneers and engineered wood that can not be sanded back or recycled. This consumerism and its production processes (logging, manufacturing and transport) is effecting our planet.

On top of that, the mass-produced products are usually made of plastic rather than metal or wood and are therefore less strong. Thus when a handle or connection breaks, it is hard to repair.

At the same time crafts and the ability to make are disappearing and are getting lost.

Our mindset has to change. It is important that when we buy a product we focus on where it comes from, how/where it is made, the quality and sustainability of the material and the long term use.

The [‘s]emlbe method connects to all this elements. In step by step actions [‘s]emble helps the maker to discover the beauty and value of objects which material/emotional wise are at the end of their life cycle.

[‘s]emble not only wants to trigger the mindset of the consumer, but it also wants to make people aware and see the value of what we already have [or what is left dumped as waste on the street]

And awareness should be followed by action: [‘s]emble wants to inspire and activate people to get started and use this method themselves.
